‘His Black Secretary’

After three days of long and exhaustive testing, Erin Murrell was sitting in a waiting room with a smile on her face. Among six other carefully selected candidates, she had won the prestigious position of a C.E.O.’s secretary in one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical company; Pharma Inc. Yet, she was nervous to finally meet the founder of the company. He was not very well-known in public, but he was her father’s best friend.

“Miss Erin Murrell, Mr. Stone is ready to meet you,” the facilitator of final testing said.

“I hope I’m ready too,” she replied with a smile.

“After what you have gone through, I am sure you are,” he said as he opened the vast wooden doors and stretched his arm out with an open palm, “I’m not going in; you have the privilege.”

After a few shy steps, she peeked through the doors. A colossal globe, bookshelf filled with rustic thick books and a white tiger carpet left her standing in wonder and waiting for somebody’s approval to come inside. She looked back at the facilitator and he simply nodded and waved his hand.

“Come on in, Miss Murrell,” a deep masculine voice said.

“Hello Mr. Stone.”

He stood in front of a mirror doing up a silky blue tie.

“What do you think of this color?” he asked as he turned around towards the doors.

“Personally, one of my favorites, but I can only assess the suitability if I know where you are going,” she said as she smiled politely.

“Your answer is exactly what I wanted to hear,” he responded before turning back towards the mirror. Since she had to focus on the tie she only grasped his smiling green eyes and charming attitude. She needed one more glance to make sure that her eyes indeed saw one of the most attractive men that she had ever had a chance to witness.

“I can find enough reasons to think it’s a good thing that I know what you want to hear, but I also know that the C.E.O. of a company like this is bored if he hears only what he wants to hear.”

“You impress me, young lady, so you don’t have to worry about being good or bad. Okay… what do you think of this suit?” he asked as he slid his palms down his torso to straighten the fabric.

“The blue color of the tie has come to the fore; if that’s what you wanted, you have achieved it.”

“Thank you,” he nodded and turned around, folding his hands behind his back.

“I have one more question,” he said, moving closer until he stood in front of her. “What was the hardest part of the test?”

“The last part. Six of us spent twelve hours doing math with only one single slice of bread to share between. Of course, nobody wanted to take a bite since they all believed it would be failure to do so. Except me. My logic was, if it’s there – it was meant to be eaten. I was ashamed at first because, as you see, I am not that slim, but I didn’t care.
